Microsoft And OpenAI Plan $100b Supercomputer Project

Microsoft and Open AI are building a massive $100 billion data center and supercomputer to take their artificial intelligence capabilities to the next level:

As of my last update in March 2024, there has been an announcement regarding a joint $100 billion supercomputer project between Microsoft and Open AI which will be launched in 2028. However, such a project could have been initiated or announced after that time. Large-scale collaborations like this have significant implications for advancing AI research and pushing the boundaries of computing capabilities. Getting Future-Ready Biggest AI supercomputer stargate, which will built as part of the data center project is likely to be launched

The world’s most expensive data center project is underway as  Microsoft and AI are building a supercomputer facility to take AI to the next level for a price tag of over $100 billion. The goal is to build a data center campus in five phases that can enable the most powerful AI offering and models for the future, including a next-level AI supercomputer dubbed Stargate that is set to be operational in 2028.

Rapid adaptation of generative artificial intelligence technology has led to skyrocketing demand for AI data centers capable of handling more advanced tasks than traditional data centers. The information reported that Microsoft would likely finance the project which is expected to be 100 times more costly than some of the biggest existing data centers, citing people involved in private conservations about the proposal

The information attributed the tentative cost of $100 billion to a person who spoke to Altman about it and a person who has viewed some of Microsoft's initial cost estimates it did not identify those sources. Altman and Microsoft have spread the supercomputers across five phases with stargate as the five phases with stargate as the fifth phase. Microsoft is working on a smaller, fourth-phase supercomputer for Open AI to be launched around 2026 according to a report

Microsoft and Open AI are in the middle of the third phase of the five-phase plan, with a significant portion of the cost for the next two phases involving acquiring the needed AI chips, the report said

Microsoft Will Fund $100 Billion Project; Use Nvidia And Others For Chips:

Microsoft head also announced a duo of custom-design computing chips in November last year. The report said the new project would be designed to work with chips from different suppliers. "We are always planning for the next generation of infrastructure innovations needed to continue pushing the frontier of AI capability," a Microsoft spokesperson said in an emailed statement to recruiters. The spokesperson did not comment directly on the report about the planned launch of the Stargate supercomputers.

The timeline for this U.S.-based data center to go online looks to be in 2028 and the project will be expanded through 2030.

Microsoft generated $62 billion in revenue during its second fiscal quarter, an increase of 18 percent year over year.
